Nail plate correction is an intervention into the patient's nail structure in order to change its shape for both aesthetic and practical purposes. This procedure can eliminate the defect and prevent infection that can develop as a result of nail plate deformation.

General information

Nails can take an unnatural shape and become deformed both due to external influences and as a result of health problems. One way or another, deformation of the nail plate can become a serious problem. One of the consequences of this kind of phenomenon is the so-called onychocryptosis, that is, the ingrowth of the nail into the soft tissues of the finger. This is far from the only, although one of the very common consequences of this pathology.

Causes of nail deformation:

  • long-term impact on the fingers, compression and blockage of normal blood flow, as well as prolonged stay of the fingers in an unnatural position. This reason is especially relevant for those who wear shoes with a pointed toe;
  • various kinds of infectious diseases, among which the most common are fungal infections. Due to the influence of the fungus, the nail becomes compacted, its structure and shape change;
  • mechanical trauma can also cause deformation of the nail plate. In some cases, the nail falls off and grows again after some time. However, the nail bed may be overgrown by that time, making it difficult for the new nail to take its natural shape;
  • congenital pathologies or structural features of the body, for example, a tendency to ingrown nails.

Nail deformation primarily affects the appearance, and a person worries that his hands or feet may look unaesthetic. However, one should not underestimate the role that nail plates play in the human body.

Incorrect nail shape can lead to the development of inflammatory processes, pain syndrome, soft tissue injuries or infection. Therefore, nail plate correction is not a cosmetic procedure, but an important therapeutic measure.

Procedure

Preparation

There are several ways to correct the nail plate. Depending on what kind of deformation (thickening, change in shape, ingrowth) caused the problem, the dermatologist uses certain methods of influence. At the same time, before the procedure, the patient will have to undergo a number of diagnostic procedures, take a blood test, and clarify the cause of the nail deformation.

Nail plate correction procedure

Nail plate correction is a non-invasive procedure that does not require any drastic intervention in the body. The doctor attaches staples and plates to the desired area of the nail, created specifically to correct its position; sometimes additional procedures are carried out to eliminate existing defects in the structure of the nail plate.

Rehabilitation period

The correction procedure itself does not cause any pain or discomfort. It does not require a recovery period. This procedure is aimed at ensuring that the nail grows correctly, changing its shape after some time as it is forced by the installed structures. Therefore, the correction process itself can last several months. At the same time, the patient leads a normal lifestyle, but must follow the doctor's instructions regarding the load on the fingers and the choice of shoes. Most often, toenails are corrected.

Indications and contraindications

Correction is necessary for any deformations of the nail plate:

  • its thickening;
  • change in growth direction;
  • change in shape;
  • splitting;
  • detachment.
Depending on the pathology, different designs and devices are used, for example, Fraser and ZTO staples, special half-staples and plates.

Contraindications

Correction of the nail plate is contraindicated in advanced cases when surgical intervention is required to eliminate defects. Also, in case of some skin diseases, it is not worth performing nail plate correction.

Complications

With the correct selection of corrective structures, complications do not arise. However, it is necessary not only to eliminate the deformation of the nail, but also to cope with the cause of its occurrence.

Prices and clinics

Nail plate correction is a fairly common procedure. The price for its implementation depends on the chosen technique and the severity of a particular case, as well as on the place where it is carried out.
