PET-CT (positron emission tomography) is a non-invasive research method that helps detect oncological diseases. It is possible to determine not the anatomical changes in human organs, but the processes occurring in them. The study allows you to diagnose tumors that are not visible at this stage.
PET-CT (positron emission tomography) is a non-invasive research method that helps detect oncological diseases. It is possible to determine not the anatomical changes in human organs, but the processes occurring in them. The study allows you to diagnose tumors that have not manifested themselves at this stage. Positron emission tomography also helps monitor the treatment of serious diseases.

PET-CT: scope of use

In addition to determining cancer, diagnostics are used in the following areas:

  • In cardiac diseases. Diagnostics is used to determine the condition of the arteries and coronary heart disease.
  • In neurological disorders. PET-CT diagnoses multiple sclerosis, post-stroke conditions, and epilepsy.
  • In psychiatry. Alzheimer's disease.

PET-CT: to do or not to do?

The advantages of this type of diagnostics include:

  • The method is considered the most accurate of all existing ones. It replaces a whole range of diagnostic procedures.
  • Does not cause discomfort or pain in patients.
  • Complete absence of side effects.
  • Detection of pathology development already at early stages.

PET-CT examination: what is it?

The required amount of a radioactive substance that is safe for human health is injected into the patient's body. After that, the substance spreads through the circulatory system of the organism being examined. The radiation allows us to determine the overall picture and display it on a computer monitor.

The nature of the disease and the task of determination determine which substance is used to conduct the study: 11C-chlorin, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose, 13N-ammonium, 11C-methionine. The last drug is prescribed when scanning a tumor in the brain.

Indications and contraindications for PET-CT

The main reason for this study is the inability to determine the pathology by other diagnostic methods. It should be noted that PET-CT allows you to assess the size and location of an oncological tumor to hundredths of a millimeter and take a puncture correctly.

In some cases, the study is contraindicated. These include, for example:

  • Postoperative period or biopsy, when data may be reproduced in a distorted form.
  • After chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
  • In case of serious inflammatory and infectious processes in the body.
  • In the event that the patient suffers from claustrophobia.

Preparation for PET-CT

The day before the examination, the patient is advised to exclude fatty and fried foods, dairy products and legumes. Drink liquid in any quantity, but exclude carbonated drinks and drinks with dyes.

For diagnostics to give the most accurate results, you need to know a few rules:

  • To avoid discomfort, it is advisable to wear warm but spacious clothes.
  • Remove all jewelry, take out small change and bank cards.
  • In case of pregnancy, allergic reactions, serious illnesses, it is necessary to warn the doctor.
  • Patients with diabetes undergo special preparation for positron emission tomography.

Diagnostics are carried out in a hospital. The patient enters a special room, after which the drug is administered and they wait for half an hour for it to spread throughout the body. Then the patient is invited to lie down on the scanner couch. Next, you need to lie still, not talk, and try not to react to the measured buzzing of the device.

It is advisable to drink as much water as possible in the 2-3 days following the diagnostics so that the previously administered drug is excreted in the urine. There are no complications after PET-CT.
