MRI of the uterus and ovaries in women is the most informative way to detect diseases at early stages of development. This is a non-invasive, modern diagnostic method, with the help of which the soft tissues of the uterus and appendages, deep vessels and lymph nodes of the pelvic organs are studied. Unlike other non-invasive diagnostic methods, MRI is characterized by its informativeness and safety, therefore scanning can be repeated many times to track the dynamics of disease development, as well as to assess the effectiveness of the therapeutic strategy undertaken.

MRI of the uterus and ovaries: the procedure

The device operates by creating a powerful electromagnetic field that causes resonance in the proton structures of hydrogen. This response is recorded by the tomograph and allows the formation of contrast two-dimensional images (sections) of the soft tissues of the pelvis.

Indications for diagnostics

The MRI procedure of the uterus and ovaries is prescribed by the attending physician in the following cases:

  • suspected malignant and benign neoplasms in the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes;
  • the presence of inflammatory processes;
  • tissue assessment in acute conditions, in particular with ovarian apoplexy;
  • abnormalities in the normal development of the genitourinary system.

Contraindications

  • the presence of any implants in the patient's body (heart muscle stimulators, vascular clips, metal fragments, etc.).

MRI of the uterus and ovaries: preparation

The patient must adhere to a special diet for 2-3 days before the start of the scan: this will reduce peristalsis and improve the clarity of the images. The bowel is cleansed the night before the examination, and the patient is advised to have a light breakfast immediately before the procedure. If the patient experiences pain before the MRI of the uterus, it is worth taking antispasmodic drugs. Diagnostics should be carried out with an unfilled bladder.
