During computed tomography, the pharynx, vessels, thyroid and parathyroid glands are examined.

CT of the larynx with contrast

The procedure of this diagnostics of the larynx using contrast is performed to identify neoplasms, areas of inflammation. The substance is administered intravenously (or orally), this makes it possible to maximally visualize the image of the examined area. With the help of a contrast agent, it is easy to identify malignant neoplasms and inflammatory processes.

Reasons to do a CT scan of the larynx

Diagnostics are carried out to clarify the diagnosis, when planning the surgical removal of foreign bodies, to establish their localization. A referral for a CT scan of the larynx is issued in the event of:

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing;
  • paralysis, inflammation of the walls, edema of the larynx;
  • to determine changes in the lymph nodes;
  • suspected oncopathology of tissues or glands;
  • to detect cysts, hyperplasia;
  • if it is necessary to diagnose injuries to the cervical spine;
  • to exclude vascular abnormalities (aneurysms, wall detachments, thrombosis, stenosis).

Restrictions on undergoing a CT scan of the larynx

There are a number of contraindications:

  • allergy to contrast agent;
  • presence of chronic diseases in the decompensation stage, especially thyroid gland;
  • pregnancy;
  • lactation;
  • severe pain syndrome, uncontrollability of movements;
  • renal failure.

Preparation

The patient should remove all jewelry, metal objects, put the phone aside. If contrast is supposed to be administered, then 3-4 hours before the scan, you should refrain from eating. You should remain motionless during the examination.
