"An absolute action antipyretic antibiotic that will cure all infectious diseases except the common cold, because the common cold is the last disease that medicine has not yet learned to fight" (Kir Bulychev)
Many will disagree with the famous writer, but in some ways he is right. Modern pharmacology has created unique effective drugs for many dangerous ailments, but it is not able to prevent common snot. What is the danger of such a pathology, and what negative consequences can arise?
The first thing that comes to mind is sinusitis. Doctors have used this term to describe inflammation of the nasal mucosa, and in some cases the maxillary sinus and bone walls.
Causes of the disease
- Hypothermia. Prolonged exposure to cold air can lead to unpleasant consequences. This is especially true for early autumn, since in September-October people do not have time to change their wardrobe and, out of habit, go outside without a hat or warm clothes.
- Allergies. Often, sources of inadequate body reactions to irritants affect us for a long period of time. Pets, indoor plants, dust at work - this is not a complete list of possible allergens that are not easy to get rid of. And the "reward" for such communication is inflammation and discharge from the nose.
- Undertreated diseases. Often we stop taking medications at the first improvement in our condition. In this case, the disease does not disappear, but only stops. Sinusitis can become a complication of such a careless attitude to your health.
In children, the source of such an ailment is usually adenoids. They provoke the development of infection, disrupting proper nasal breathing.
Symptoms of the disease
The initial stage of sinusitis is always common rhinitis. That is, if you have a lingering runny nose that is difficult to treat, then you should consult a specialized specialist. Only a therapist or otolaryngologist can prescribe the correct therapy for such inflammation.
The development of the disease is accompanied by:
- pressure and discomfort in the nasal cavity;
- pain localized in the frontal region, temporal lobe or cheekbones;
- difficulty breathing through the nose and severe nasal congestion;
- abundant yellow, green or white discharge;
- temperature jump to 38 degrees and above;
- severe fatigue and drowsiness.
In some cases, sinusitis can cause photophobia, facial asymmetry, swelling.
Manifestations of the disease are often confused with dental pathologies and dentists are consulted for treatment. However, after an X-ray examination, such patients are sent to an ENT specialist. Also, the body's warning sign of the onset of the disease is loss of smell and purulent discharge from the eyes.
Treatment of the disease
The choice of actions aimed at suppressing the source of sinusitis depends on many factors. For example, on the individual characteristics of the structure of the nasal sinuses or the patient's susceptibility to certain medications. There are three main types of treatment procedures.
1. Non-puncture. Most often, doctors prescribe nasal lavage. The well-known Proetz method, or "cuckoo", is used. The patient lies on his back. Flexible tubes are inserted into his nose. A pharmacological solution is slowly injected through one, and pus and other secretions are sucked out through the other. Usually, this procedure is performed in combination with laser therapy.
It is important to know that such a treatment method can only be prescribed in the early stages of sinusitis and with normal functionality of the anastomosis.
Like any other bacterial inflammation, sinusitis of the same name is suppressed by antibiotics. The most commonly used drugs are Azithromycin and Macropen. The choice of drug depends entirely on the severity of the disease and the sensitivity of the flora to specific drugs. Only the attending physician can prescribe such drugs. If the disease does not cause severe discomfort and the local immunity of the mucous membrane copes with the disease, then a gentle regimen can be used. Sprays Bioparox, Isofra and drops containing colloidal silver have shown good results.
2. Puncture. Puncture of the sinus is necessary for purulent exacerbation of inflammation. Puncture allows you to quickly remove discharge, rinse the cavity and inject antibiotics there. It must be remembered that such an operation is quite painful. Therefore, it is performed under local anesthesia.
Often, one puncture is not enough to completely cleanse the problem area. The procedure has to be repeated several times over 2-3 weeks. To speed up recovery, special catheters are inserted into the incision sites, which allow the administration of medications.
3. Surgical. Surgical intervention is performed only as a last resort. Usually, this type of treatment is used after conservative therapy has failed and the resulting polyps have blocked the airways. Excision of problem areas is performed under general anesthesia.
Today, alternative and folk medicine is becoming increasingly popular. There are a huge number of recipes that help cure the disease. But all of them should be used as additional treatment and carried out only under the supervision of specialized specialists.
Inhalations, rinsing with saline solutions, compresses and oil instillations are unlikely to suppress the source of inflammation without taking antibacterial drugs. These are only auxiliary measures. Boost your immunity, treat rhinitis in a timely manner, try to avoid exposure to allergens – and sinusitis will pass you by.
