Indications for blepharoplasty:
- ptosis (drooping) of the upper eyelid;
- narrow eye shape;
- creases in the corners;
- fatty hernia under the eyes or above the eyelids.
The muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid loses tone with age. As a result, the eyebrows droop and bags form under the eyes. Such changes make you look much older than your years. In addition, sagging skin worsens peripheral (side) vision. With the help of blepharoplasty, it is possible to correct these defects without visible traces of surgical intervention.
Methods of blepharoplasty
Depending on each specific case, the patient may be offered a choice of two surgical options:
- laser. A modern method of aesthetic surgery that allows for laser eyelid correction;
- surgical. Excision of excess skin is performed with a scalpel. This classic technique is gradually losing its relevance.
How the operation is performed
Plastic surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia. The intervention is absolutely painless and does not pose a risk to vision.
To correctly make the incision, the doctor first applies markings to the skin with a special marker. Then the excess tissue is removed. Finally, the surgeon sutures the wound and applies a sterile bandage.
The duration of the correction depends on the method of action and the localization of the problem area. Usually the entire process lasts no more than two hours. Most of the time is taken up by preparatory actions.
Rehabilitation period
Recovery after correction is carried out at home. Inpatient observation is not required.
The patient must take good care of the operated eyelids. To speed up the rehabilitation period, doctors recommend following these rules:
- be sure to wear sunglasses when going outside;
- you can start working no earlier than 7-10 days later;
- you should stop using cosmetics while the wounds are healing;
- eliminate physical activity;
- temporarily stop visiting the sauna or bathhouse.
Already 3-5 days after the plastic surgery, you need to visit the hospital to remove the stitches. After this, the doctor applies protective stickers to the operated area, which cannot be removed for a week.
If lower eyelid surgery was performed, then healing takes longer. In some cases, full recovery occurs within a year.
The effect of blepharoplasty lasts for 7-10 years.
Complications after blepharoplasty
Pain. After the anesthesia wears off, a throbbing pain appears, which is easily eliminated with painkillers.
Swelling. Swelling can persist for about two weeks. To reduce swelling and speed up the healing process, apply cold compresses.
Hematoma. Bruises disappear in 5-7 days.
Redness of the whites of the eyes. This temporary phenomenon completely disappears after a month.
Infection. If the rules of asepsis are violated, there is a high risk of infection.
Short-term visual impairment. After removing the bandage, blurry spots appear before the eyes. Sensitivity to bright light also increases.
Scars. Incisions on the eyelids heal with the formation of a thin scar, which becomes barely noticeable only after a month.
Contraindications
Eyelid plastic surgery is prohibited if the patient has serious ailments, such as:
- malignant tumors;
- allergy;
- leukemia (blood diseases);
- thyroid diseases;
- conjunctivitis;
- diabetes mellitus;
- hypertension;
- increased intraocular pressure.
