The World Health Organization states that every third woman and every sixth man suffers from iron deficiency anemia. Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein that acts as a kind of “transport vehicle” in the body.

Forms of anemia:

  • Anemia due to blood loss.
  • Anemia due to insufficient production of red blood cells in the body (aplastic, iron deficiency, megaloblastic, sideroblastic, chronic diseases).
  • Anemia due to abnormal destruction of red blood cells (hemolytic).

The World Health Organization states that every third woman and every sixth representative of the stronger sex suffers from iron deficiency anemia. Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein that plays the role of a kind of “vehicle” in the body. It carries oxygen and thus carries out the function of tissue respiration. The normal functioning of cells and the entire body depends on it.

The optimal daily intake of iron is 15 mg for women (30 mg during pregnancy) and 12 mg for men

Hemoglobin makes up only 65 ten-thousandths of a percent of body weight, which is about three and a half grams for a 70-kilogram man.

Symptoms

Sometimes anemia is asymptomatic and becomes an unexpected discovery for a person. Symptoms depend on the severity and stage of the disease. In mild forms of anemia, a person feels weak, gets tired quickly, and has decreased concentration. More severe anemia manifests itself in shortness of breath with minor exertion, increased heart rate, sleep disturbances, appetite, and decreased libido. Men may experience decreased potency, and women may experience menstrual irregularities. In severe forms, the disease can cause heart failure.

Symptoms of anemia also include increased pallor (of the skin, mucous membranes, and nail plates), fainting, and with a lack of folic acid in food, yellowing of the skin, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth and tongue, tingling in the hands and feet are added to the symptoms.

With anemia, the psychoemotional state worsens, for example, excessive irritability or apathy may be observed. Sometimes gastritis with low acidity occurs. With this disease, iron absorption slows down, intestinal colitis occurs.

If you notice some of these symptoms, you should immediately make an appointment with a hematologist or therapist. Anemia reduces immunity and, due to a loss of strength, limits performance. A qualified doctor will determine what exactly caused the tired blood based on a blood test and what medications will help return the body to a normal state.

Anemia in pregnant women can cause various complications: the risk of miscarriages and premature births increases. Also, anemia in expectant mothers can negatively affect the health of the child. Children whose mothers suffered from anemia during pregnancy often have an iron deficiency, so the child's health must be monitored especially carefully.

Prevention

Anemia is also a lack of oxygen in the blood, so it is extremely important to alternate office work with walks in the fresh air, preferably in a pine forest. To prevent iron deficiency anemia, you can also use breathing exercises: alternate a short inhalation through the nose and a prolonged (up to eight seconds) exhalation through the mouth, squeezing your lips into a tube.

Prevention of iron deficiency anemia can be carried out using folk remedies, infusions and decoctions of herbs. Make rosehip tea, ginseng tincture, add fish dishes to your diet or drink fish oil.

If the cause of the disease is insufficient iron, folic acid or vitamin B12, you need to replenish their levels in the body and restore absorption. In addition to the medications prescribed by your doctor, you can include green vegetables, beans, red meat, liver, fruits, nuts and honey in your diet and exclude caffeinated drinks (tea, coffee) for a while, since they interfere with the absorption of iron. But in no case should you prescribe iron-containing drugs to yourself: excess metal negatively affects the structure of DNA, can damage the liver, kidneys, and also stimulate the development of heart failure.

Childhood anemia can be caused by parasites in the digestive tract, poor nutrition, and a lack of vitamins. Often, anemia is observed due to weakened immunity due to past illnesses.
