Modern medicine distinguishes two forms of the disease (acute, chronic). Often the manifestations of the disease are confused with testicular torsion, due to the similarity of symptoms.

The main sources of problems with the epididymis are pathogenic bacteria. But there are other reasons for the appearance of inflammation.

  • Infections affecting the urethra, prostate, vas deferens (gonorrhea, trichomonas, chlamydia).
  • Microorganisms of the classes of bacteria, viruses, fungi.
  • Consequences of using urinary catheters.
  • Complications after diseases (tuberculosis, urethritis, prostatitis, mumps).
  • Escherichia coli.
  • Having sex with a full bladder.
  • Side effects of some medications.

Symptoms of the disease increase as the inflammatory process develops. Usually the peak of discomfort occurs in the first 24 hours.

  • Pain in the side or peritoneum. Their localization depends on the rate of spread of the infection (lower back, groin).
  • Swelling of the scrotum (the organ can greatly increase in volume).
  • Impaired urination.
  • Blood in urine or semen.
  • Fever, fever.
  • Appearance of a cyst.
  • Purulent or mucous discharge from the urethra.
  • Intoxication.
If you notice such symptoms, you should immediately seek help from a urologist. Without proper treatment, epididymitis can develop into more severe disorders of the reproductive system in men.

Diagnostics of testicular pathology consists of examination and anamnesis. Often, the urologist palpates the reproductive organ for neoplasms. If a urological disorder is suspected, additional clinical studies and medical procedures are prescribed.

Blood tests, Doppler sonography, urethral scanning, tests for sexually transmitted infections, and urine culture for microflora can confirm the diagnosis. Depending on the suspected lesion, an ultrasound examination is performed. It can be used to differentiate it from testicular torsion.

The choice of treatment methods depends on the form and nature of epididymitis.

  • In acute cases, it is necessary to establish bed rest for the patient. Avoid increased physical activity in every possible way. Applying a cold compress to the site of inflammation helps relieve pain. Sometimes doctors advise wearing tight, tight-fitting underwear or a suspensory so that the scrotum is up. pharmacotherapy is used, consisting of antibiotics and drugs that relieve painful symptoms and inflammation. The most popular medications are Amoxicillin, Diclofenac, Celebrex, Ofloxacin, Trimoxazole.
  • With prolonged, chronic exposure to the testicles, drug therapy does not always lead to the desired results. Under such conditions, it is necessary to resort to surgical intervention. There are two types of operations - resection and removal of the appendage. A negative consequence of such exposure is the impossibility of fertilization, so resection is performed on representatives of the older age group.

In order to prevent inflammation, you should follow simple recommendations. It is necessary to avoid hypothermia in the groin area, practice safe sex, in some cases reduce the frequency of sexual intercourse or masturbation and periodically undergo examinations by doctors.
