Sand baths – psammotherapy and who it is intended for
Psammotherapy is a procedure in which the human body is immersed in fine, sifted and clean sand. Even ancient scientists attached great importance to sand, saying that in certain situations it can become a real panacea.
Of course, you shouldn't expect that independent, five-minute burying in sand, which children do as a game, can have a healing effect, since psammotherapy is a whole technique, and it can only be done under the supervision of a qualified specialist.
The following types of sand are used in psammotherapy:
- Sea;
- River;
- Lake.
Practical use of sand baths
Psammotherapy is carried out directly in natural, open areas with sand. Most of all, this type of treatment is practiced at Black Sea resorts, where there are beaches with good golden sand. For this purpose, special medallions are created on the beach, which are fenced in to protect from the wind. The patient is placed on sand heated to 50°C, which is also applied in small quantities to his stomach and part of the chest. For adults, the course of treatment may consist of 15 procedures lasting from half an hour to an hour.
Beneficial properties of sand baths
Psammotherapy has two effects on the human body:
- Thermal.
Dry, evenly heated sand has a warming effect, which causes increased sweating, and blood circulation is activated. Sand baths are comparable to air and water baths, as well as mud therapy. Only, unlike the last option, psammotherapy is much more pleasant, and a calm and relaxed stay in the sand calms the psychological state of a person, as a result of which he receives not only physical healing, but also mental.
Mechanical.As a rule, grains of sand are always irregular in shape, its corners are clear and often even sharp, due to this, while in sand baths, a person receives a certain cosmetic procedure, since the top layer of dead skin is exfoliated. And further swimming, without which psammotherapy cannot do, only enhances this effect. Also, the mechanical action of sand grains affects the nerve endings of the skin, the patient experiences relaxation and a feeling of complete peace.
