General Information
Apolipoproteins form the basis of lipoproteins – protein-fat complexes ensuring proper lipid circulation in the blood. There are two types of this substance:
- Apolipoproteins B-100, synthesized in the liver. These proteins are involved in forming low-density lipoproteins (LDL), rich in cholesterol.
- Apolipoproteins B-48, formed in the intestine and transported to the liver.
Cholesterol in LDL supports vital processes in the body, such as cell membrane formation, steroid production, and synthesis of male and female sex hormones (androgens and estrogens). However, cholesterol can accumulate on blood vessel walls, reducing their elasticity. This slows blood circulation, and poor vessel patency can trigger cardiovascular diseases, particularly myocardial infarction and stroke.
The most accurate diagnostic method is the apolipoprotein B-100 test, which determines the concentration of “bad” LDL cholesterol.
Indications for Apolipoprotein B Testing
The apolipoprotein B test is most effective when combined with other studies: total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein A1 levels.
It is recommended for the following groups:
- Individuals with nicotine or alcohol dependency;
- Those with elevated blood pressure;
- People who have had a heart attack or stroke, or those with ischemic heart disease;
- Patients with diabetes mellitus or obesity.
Elevated apolipoprotein levels may indicate genetic abnormalities. The test is advised for individuals with direct relatives who have cardiovascular pathologies. As a preventive measure, it is recommended for all men over 45 and women over 55.
Reference values: men – 0.66-1.33 g/L, women – 0.6-1.17 g/L.
How the Apolipoprotein B Test Is Performed
Blood must be drawn on an empty stomach, with 10-12 hours elapsed since the last meal. A specialist collects venous blood. Alcohol consumption is prohibited before the procedure, and physical exertion is undesirable. If the patient is taking medications, the attending physician and lab technician must be informed of their names and dosages. The procedure takes no more than 5 minutes.
